Model S window tint

The S has the longest door glass in the Tesla lineup, and curved glass means the film must be heat-shrunk to the exact shape before it is laid. Done right, you cannot find the edge from inside the car.

Model 3 and Model Y ceramic tint

These are the cars we see most from Hawthorne. The rear glass on both is installed as one sheet, the frameless doors are trimmed to clear the seals, and the heat rejection is noticeable on the first warm day.

Driving in from Hawthorne

Figure about 8 miles, roughly 16 to 19 minutes outside rush hour. We are open Monday through Saturday from 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM and closed on Sunday. Schedule first, then either leave the car with us for the day or wait at the shop while it is tinted. We have had Teslas driven in from San Diego for this work; Hawthorne is a quick hop by comparison.

    Is the Model S harder to tint than a Model 3?

    It takes more shaping. The Model S door glass is long and curved in two directions, so the film is heat-formed on the outside of the window until it matches, then moved inside. A Model 3 door is shorter and flatter. That difference is why Tesla tint is quoted by model.

    Will ceramic film affect the Model S sensors or the cellular antenna?

    No. The ceramic film has no metallic layer, so radio, cellular and Bluetooth signals pass through as before. The windshield camera area and the parking sensors are left exactly as Tesla built them, and the film is cut to keep those zones uncovered.

    Can I get the Tesla tinted and a dash camera installed on the same Hawthorne trip?

    Yes. The dash camera install runs the power cable behind the trim to a fused source, so nothing hangs from the mirror. It adds time, so when you book from Hawthorne say you want both and we will set aside the full day. Drop-off is the easiest way to handle it.

    What shade should Hawthorne Model S owners pick for the back glass?

    Most go darker in the back than the front, since California only limits the front doors to 70% light transmission. The rear doors and back window can be as dark as you like. We hold samples against your glass in daylight so you choose by eye, not by a number.

    How soon after the tint can I use the rear defroster?

    Give the film a few days to cure first, then use the defroster normally. The ceramic film sits on top of the defroster lines and does not interfere with them once it is dry. Keep the windows up during that curing window and you will be fine.
